Periodontics Q & A

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the specialty area of dentistry that focuses on the health of the structures surrounding the tooth root, primarily the gums. A dentist who offers periodontics services and care is skilled in the treatment of all stages of gum diseases (also called periodontal disease) as well as the placement of dental implants.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is the moderate to severe form of gum disease. The more mild form is called gingivitis. In periodontitis, bacterial invasion has advanced considerably, causing significant gum recession and often tooth root weakening, resulting in pain, infection and loose teeth. Periodontitis requires special treatment approaches to eradicate bacteria below the gums and around the roots, and it may also require gum grafting to help rebuild the protective tissues around the teeth.

How is gum disease treated?

Moderate to severe disease will usually require deep cleaning using special techniques called root planing and scaling to remove bacteria in the root pocket and on the root, as well as antibiotics to help kill hard-to-reach bacteria. Lasers may also be used in some gum disease treatment plans. More mild disease can often be treated with successive back-to-back cleaning appointments to ensure tartar and bacteria are removed so gums and teeth stay healthy.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Seeing the dentist every six months for a cleaning and exam is one of the most important steps you can take to keep gum disease at bay. Brushing and flossing regularly using proper techniques are also very important. During your dental cleaning and exam, the hygienist will be able to tell where your brushing and flossing efforts are falling short and provide you with guidance to ensure you keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible between your regular cleaning appointments.
